uncommon after 3 or 4 yrs.
wide spectrum of illness
abnormal signs : very variable
commonly upper resp. tract symptoms of several days.
patchy bronchopneumonia ; pleural fluid, pneumatocele, abscess, lobar consolidation
inconsistent with viral pnemonia
no readily available means to differentiate between virus, Mycoplasma and bacteria
- Prognosis : good
* Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
- frequent cause of pneumonia in children 5-15 years
incubation period : 2-3 wks
insidious onset with constitutional symptoms : malaise, anorexia, headache, fever
- non productive cough, minor physical findings
illness in parts of the respir. tract other than lung
non respir. sites of involvement (skin, CNS, blood, heart)
X-ray : patchy consolidation usually unilateral lower lobe
-neutralizing Ab or CF Ab rise
