1. 서론

경제성장과 산업화로 생활 수준이 향상됨에 따라 건강 및 미용에 대한 관심이 더욱 커지면서 비만예방 및 치료 위한 여러 가지 기능성 식품 개발이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)는 필수지방산인 linoleic acid의 이중결합의 위치 및 기하학적(cis, trans) 이성체를 총칭하여 불러지는 이름이다. 여러 이성체 중 cis-9, trans-11 와 trans-10, cis-12 이성체가 생리 활성이 큰 물질로 알려지고 있다(Figure 1). CLA는 반추동물에서 유래된 육류, 우유 및 유제품에 존재하며 그 함량은 동물의 사육조건이나 가공처리 과정에 따라 달라진다.

CLA는 1987년 위스콘신대학의 Pariza 교수의 연구실에서 항암효과를 가진 물질을 연구하던 중 햄버거 쇠고기에서 우연히 발견된 물질이며 그 후 동물실험 및 조직배양 연구를 통하여 항암효과, 면역조절효과, 체지방 감소효과, 항산화 효과, 항동맥경화 효과, 당뇨병 치료효과 등 여러 가지 생리적인 효과가 알려지면서 폭발적으로 많은 논문이 발표되어 왔다.
특히 최근 CLA의 체지방 감소 및 근육량 증가 효과에 대한 일부 인체연구가 발표되면서 미국, 유럽 등 외국에서는 비만개선 건강보조제로 CLA 캡슐이 많이 판매되고 있는 실정이나 한국에서는 아직 KFDA의 승인이 나지 않은 상태이다.
따라서 본 기고에서는 이제까지 알려진 CLA의 항암성, 면역증진, 항동맥경화성, 당뇨병 치료성 등의 주요 생리 기능을 간략히 논하고 CLA의 체지방 감소 효과를 동물실험, 인체연구, 세포배양실험을 통하여 고찰하고 가능한 관련 기전을 알아보아 과연 CLA가 비만 예방이나 치료제로서의 개발에 문제가 없는지에 초점을 맞추고자 한다.
