부자는 이런 탐욕 외에 또 다른 문제를 안고 있다. 그것은 일하겠다는 의지가 없는 것이다. 그렇다면 이 부자는 은퇴하겠다는 것인가? 일부 학자들은 그렇게 이해한다. Hughes, Luke, 48; Trench, 『주님의 비유』, 170-71.
그러나 이것을 은퇴라고 보기는 어렵다. 상식적으로 큰 밭을 가진 사람이 많은 소출을 거두었다고 더 이상 경작을 하지 않을 것 같지는 않기 때문이다. 더욱이 당대의 지주들은 소작농을 많이 이용하였으므로 편히 살기 위해 굳이 은퇴해야 할 필요는 없다. 이것은 부자가 앞으로는 생산을 위해 많이 노력하지 않고 사치하고 게으른 삶을 살겠다는 의미로 보는 것이 자연스럽다. 그렇다면 부자는 자기의 사명을 다하지 않고 게으르게 사는 문제를 안게 된다.
20절은 이렇게 행동하는 부자를 어리석다고 한다. 그가 어리석다고 불리는 데는 몇 가지 이유가 있다. 그는 재물이 많으면 행복하게 살 수 있으리라고 생각한다. 자기의 생명이 계속 유지되리라고 생각한다. 그리고 재물을 이기적으로 사용하려고 한다. 이제 더 이상 열심히 일하지 않으려고 한다. 이런 모습은 재물을 의지하고 하나님을 의지하지 않는 것이며, 하나님을 인정하…(생략)
