Moscovici가 Durkheim의 집단표상에 가한 또 하나의 수정은, Durkheim이 집단표상을 변하기 어려운, 고정적 성질을 지닌 것으로 파악하고 있는데 대한 비판에서 나온 것이다. ‘아리스토텔레스’와 ‘칸트’의 전통을 따랐던 Durkheim의 이론에서 표상은 사회에 존재하는 말(words)을 고정시키는 작용을 하는 것으로 개념화되었다. Moscovici는 이러한 개념화가 전적으로 틀리지는 않으나, 오늘날의 사회에서는 과거와 달리 표상이 더욱 가변적이며, 전파성이 매우 높다는 것이다. 따라서 현대사회에서의 표상은 과거의 전통사회에서의 표상처럼 오래 지속되지 못하는 단명성을 갖는다. 특히 정치, 과학, 사회문제에 관련된 표상은 기존의 표상이 고정화되기도 전에 새로운 표상이 요구되고, 결과적으로 새로운 표상으로 쉽게 대치되는 사례가 많다. 또한 서로 양립되기 어려운, 다양한 상식이, 그것도 서로 유관한 다성질의 상식과 정보가 공존하는 오늘의 사회적 현실에서는 표상의 구조가 과거에 비해 훨씬 더 높은 역동성을 갖는다는 것이다. 이러한 가변성, 단명성, 역동성을 함축하며, 동시에 표상이 사회적 과정속에서 생멸된다는 점을 암시하기 위해, Moscovici는 Dur…(생략)
